We see a plain-clothes cop, his girlfriend with another man, a mother and child, an American tourist with a video camera, and a Secret Service agent newly returned from medical leave. Shots ring out and the President falls; a few minutes later, we hear a distant explosion, then a bomb goes off in the square. Those minutes are retold, several times, emphasizing different characters' actions. Gradually, we discover who's behind the plot. Is the Secret Service one step ahead, or have the President's adversaries thought of everything?
The attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.
A real messy mix of a film. It begins with the assassination of the President and a subsequent bomb attack in Spain; the story then rewinds and unfolds as it is shown from the perspective of multiple &quot;vantage points&quot; of participants who happen to be at the scene. As each strand comes to a close, having brought a further understanding of what&#39;s taken place, the film rewinds in time to present yet another perspective.<br/><br/>The film&#39;s idea was, of course, first utilised by Akira Kurosawa in RASHOMON, but VANTAGE POINT is an entirely different spin on the same subject, making use of modern technology to present its story in a fresh and interesting way. Although some of the twists and developments are fairly unbelievable, I felt I was seeing something new – which is getting unusual with films these days. Unfortunately, at around the halfway point, the movie finishes telling that particular story and then muddles in some perfunctionary subsequent events, involving well-shot car chases, terrorist cells and traitors. It&#39;s not bad, but too heavily indebted to the look and style of the Greengrass BOURNE films.<br/><br/>The ensemble cast is impressive but lesser than the sum of its parts. Bland actors like Matthew Fox and William Hurt are given plenty of screen time while Forest Whitaker and in particular Sigourney Weaver are wasted in minor roles. Dennis Quaid has a major turn as a presidential bodyguard, but seems to be aping Harrison Ford for the majority of the film. The non-American actors (Edgar Ramirez, Said Taghmaoui and Dolorez Heredia) give the most authentic turns.
OK, so the film has plenty of plot holes and some absurd and silly twists, but it did keep me entertained enough that I managed to ignore my crackberry for the length of the film. There were some laughable moments, but if you&#39;re prepared to suspend disbelief, as you should be to watch most Hollywood action films, it does deliver enough fast paced action to get your pulse up. The acting was good, the multiple view points added an interesting angle and wasn&#39;t nearly as bad as some people have complained about in their comments here. You won&#39;t go away with a sense of wonder, or be discussing the intricate details of the plot over dinner a week later and the film certainly won&#39;t change your life, but you should be entertained for the duration.
Produced by Paul Greengrass, and conceived as something of a companion film to his own "Bloody Sunday," there wasn't a moment in "Omagh" that rang false. There's not a single one in Vantage Point that rings true.
